Our Healthy Aging Program is perfect for all those who are interested in keeping their minds and bodies in shape. With a wide array of exercise classes, cooking & nutrition classes, and monthly interactive presentations featuring a variety of healthy topics lead by special guest speakers.
Focus on full body fitness in Let's Get Moving - Cardio/Strength with instructor Michael Tatmon Jr. This fun and engaging class targets a different part of your body. This is an active class that will get your heart rate up while building overall strength. You’ll learn new techniques, healthy and safe exercise tips and interesting fun facts while working out with fellow Good Life participants. Exercise adaptations are suggested, so every skill level can join. Classes are live every Wednesday and Friday at 11am PT via Zoom. At the end of each class, you can ask the instructor about your workout questions.The Let’s Get Moving exercise classes are part of The Good Life, a series of exercise, nutrition and healthy aging events for all those who are interested in keeping their minds and bodies in shape.
Instructor - Michael Tatmon Jr. My name is Michael Tatmon Jr. I have been involved in fitness my whole life being an athlete and playing sports from a kid to playing college sports. Son of a fitness trainer and great teacher of fitness. I have been professionally training people in fitness for over 10 years. 2 years previous experience freelance and 8 years with the City of Oakland.I have been lead fitness trainer for The Good Life for 2 years now. I hold an BA degree in Criminal Justice from Benedictine College, and an AA in Liberal Studies from Chabot College. I also hold certification is Personal training, Fitness training, Senior Fitness, Diabetes and Prevention certification, Diabetes and Dementia Prevention certification, Lifestyle coach certification. I also specialize in motivation, positive spirit and encouragement.
Improve your muscle functionality where strength and flexibility is the ultimate goal in Let’s Get Moving - Stretch/Strength with instructor Winifred “Winnie” Cabiness. Consistent stretching can guard against injury from falls, sprains, strains and breaks to muscle tissue as we age. Warm up your muscles and increase circulation to the arms and legs. The exercises in this class will focus on deep breathing, range of motion stretching, both Static and Dynamic. Our strength exercises will utilize your own bodyweight and free weights, with emphasis on breath, and muscular stabilization techniques to strengthen the core. Muscular strength and endurance is another component of this class, utilizing resistance tools, balls, large and small, stretch bands, and tubing. Balance is also a part of this class, sitting, standing, squats and push-ups at the wall. Participants will notice the difference in strength, balance and agility. Classes are live every Thursday at 9am PT via Zoom. At the end of each class, you can ask the instructor about your workout questions.
Instructor - Winifred Cabiness Winifred Cabiness, is a Certified Fitness Instructor, in multiple formats, Body Sculpting, Pilates Mat and Apparatus, Restorative Yoga, Active Aging. Strength, Stability, Balance & Fall Prevention. Anchored in the Physical Therapeutic aspects of the Pilates work on rehab of joints, muscles and muscle and bone alignment, Winifred has built a reputation for building Multi-aged Fitness Coalitions of persons of varied Strengths and fitness aptitudes. She has championed her technique in many settings, corporate and commercial; among those are: KPfit, Corporate facilities for Kaiser Permanente, Genentech Corp. Gym, UC Berkeley Campus facility, Gold’s Gym, Bally’s. Crunch Fitness Program Director, YMCA of America, various locations, Girl’s Inc., Youth Summer Program, City of Oakland, Parks & Rec, Diamond Hills Sports Club & Spa. The Good Life Project is a dream come true, as it represents the type of Wellness Community that she envisioned.
Moves and Grooves with instructor Irma Hernandez is a cardio dance fitness class similar to Zumba. This class is ideal for those who are looking to move their bodies to upbeat music. It’s great for all fitness levels and families looking to start the week off with a fun workout! Classes are live every Monday at 11am PT via Zoom. At the end of each class, you can ask the instructor about your workout questions.
Instructor - Irma Hernandez Hello! I'm Irma Hernandez, I became an aerobics instructor in '93. My instructor training was done in my hometown of Mexico City at prestigious academies recognized by the FAA (Federal Association of Aerobics) such as Guiesca, Beverly Hills, and Olga Aerobics among others. I even had my own gym in Mexico, which was quite popular. I've been teaching in the Bay Area since 2002, a ZIN™ Member since Apr 2011 and I absolutely love teaching Zumba classes. The reason is simple: Every class feels like a party! I am currently licensed to teach Zumba, Zumba® Toning, Aqua Zumba®, Zumba® Kids & Kids Jr. Since 2010 I have been working with the City of Oakland as a Recreation Specialist ll. It is a position that I love and respect very much since I have met all kinds of people and have made great friendships through my work and that makes me very happy.

Let's Get Cooking with chef Shanette Merrick features new dishes every week, perfect for meals or snacks. We’ll highlight all the nutritional benefits, cooking techniques, tips and fun facts.This is ideal for families learning to cook or those looking to update their recipe repertoire! Classes are live every Thursday at 11am PT via Zoom. At the end of each class, you eat your latest creation while asking the chef your questions. Oakland Residents Only: Weekly Online Ingredient Registration is required to request ingredients for Pickup or Delivery. Ingredient registration opens at 12am PT the Sunday before each class. Registration and request must be received by Wednesday at 8am PT. Ingredients are available to the first 20 registrants who request ingredients. Food delivery is available for up to 5 participants within a 10 mile radius of East Oakland Sports Center.
Instructor - Shanette Merrick Shanette is a resident of Oakland California and serves as the Clinical Research Supervisor at UC Davis Medical Center since 2019 and has 7 years in clinical research. Shanette’s role at TGL is the ensure the success, viability and advancement of the program. Being completely present with every facet during the launching this program gives Shanette a wonderful advantage to know all of the workings, inside and out, it has also sparked a passion to help the elderly. Shanette is always focused on the needs of the participants, works with each one individually, then brings all that knowledge back to her team to design customized regimens conformed to the seniors comfort level and desired results. In her spare time, Shanette enjoys cooking, dancing and traveling with her 4 children.
