Oakland, CA – October 01, 2024 – The Good Life, an Oakland-based nonprofit, is holding its second annual health fair, “It Takes A Village,” on November 2 at The Loom in Oakland, CA. This event addresses the growing health crises of diabetes, heart disease, and dementia – conditions that now affect not only the elderly but also younger adults.
Recognizing the urgent need for early intervention, The Good Life empowers families to adopt healthier habits across generations. Through free online classes, accessible resources, and in-person health fairs, the program engages communities in a proactive journey toward healthier living.
“Preventable conditions like heart disease and diabetes are affecting younger people than ever before,” says Shanette Merrick, Clinical Research Supervisor at UC Davis Medical Center and Executive Director of The Good Life. “By educating younger generations, new parents, midlife adults, and the elderly, we can help them establish healthy habits, raise healthier children, and implement better care for aging family members. Even starting with small changes, like increasing daily movement, can make a big difference. I believe if we come together and talk about this as a community, we will see a positive multi-generational impact. ”
The Good Life promotes simple, effective solutions through free exercise classes and health resources, encouraging more physical activity and better nutrition – small changes that have a significant impact on preventing chronic conditions.
In partnership, as Chief Scientist with Dr. David Johnson, an Associate Professor of Neurology and Director of the California State Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, The Good Life is leading a science-based movement to create lasting, positive change.
Their multigenerational approach includes classes, health fairs, and community-driven events to build sustainable, healthy communities.
Healthy aging is about more than extending lifespan; it’s about improving quality of life. The Good Life emphasizes that healthy habits formed in youth and in midlife can prevent conditions like dementia, diabetes, and heart disease, adding both years and vitality to life.
The “It Takes A Village” health fair will offer free wellness checks, expert speakers, fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, meals, groceries, haircuts, and more. It’s a key opportunity for community members to connect with health experts, learn practical ways to improve their lifestyles, and support each other on the path to better health.
